Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary

Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre is located about 25 kilometers west of Sandakan, in eastern Malaysia on the island of Borneo in the state of Sabah. It was started in 1964 for rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned baby orangutans from logging sites, plantations, and illegal hunting. The orphaned orang-utans are trained to survive again in the wild and are released as soon as ready. The sanctuary is located within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve which covers an area of 5529 ha, much of which is virgin jungle[1]. It has become one of Sabah's top tourist attractions.

Hey Everyone! We are wishing you happy 52 Merdeka celebration from Orang Utans angles.

Through all the giggles and the tears we shared together, we were so happy that we are finally celebrating 52 aniversary of Merdeka. We have the freedom. Don't you think that we should share the freedom with Orang Utans too? They want to be free just like us.

Our hope for Orang Utans are:

1. To be love by human race.

2. To be support by human.

3. No more cutting trees in their habitate.

4. No more shooting them, killing them or harm them.

5. Give them some hope so they can live.

Now, tell us your hope for orang utans. Hope for this Merdeka celebration day so Orang Utans can feel the excitement about Merdeka.

Ep 5 : New Hope

"Elmo!! Elmo!!. Wake up!" A strong voice woke me up from a sweet dream I had. "It's your mother!". As soon as I heard the 'Mother' word, I was alarmed! "What's wrong with my mother?" I asked curiously. "She..err..She..".............


"She fell down from a tree when she's swinging to get you food" The owner of the voice was one of my mother's friend. "Fell from a tree? That's impossible. That couldn't be my mommy! My mommy was a good swinger!" I said harshly as I disagreed to what he said. "Yes Elmo, It's true. Your mother was one of the best swingers" He agreed. "WAS? What do you mean by was?" Curiously I asked "Your mother is dead. She was a great swinger but the swing was not the cause. She.. err" I looked straight into his eyes and ran to find my mother. I couldn't believe my ears. No way my mother was dead! This must be some joke!



When I arrived at the catastrophic place, I studded. I saw a body of an Orang Utan lying on the nature carpet. That was not my mother! It could not be my mother! I walked closer to her. She did not breath. She did not cry. She did not even call my name. I touched her fur slowly and I stared at her fur. I was shocked. It was my mother. I rubbed my eyes. The lady was really my mother. "Mommy! Wake up!" I shook her body. Hard. I really could not believe my eyes. "Mommy! Why don't you answer me mommy!" I screamed. She never refused to talk to me even though she was very busy. She answered my call all the time. Who was that woman! She looked like my mother, but she did not act like my mother!. Suddenly I saw there was a hole on her stomach. "What is this?" I asked angrily. "Dear Elmo, now hush dear. Your mother got shot by a human" Aunt Serina said and hugged me from behind. She tried to calm me down. "That's not my mommy! My mommy always talks to me!" I screamed my lungs out. I WANT MY MOMMY!!!


I cried all the way to Aunt Serina's place. Since that gloomy day, I lived with her. She took care of me after my late mother. A week passed by and I never laughed again since that day. All I did was producing tons more tears. It was just not the same without my mother. I still can smell her. I still can hear her voice clearly. I remember how she played with me. Pampered me in her lap. She gave me everything that she could possibly give. She held my hand every second in her life. She kissed my forehead and my cheeks before I go to sleep. She read me bedtime story and she also treated me like a real princess. I miss her so much. I want her to be by my side now.


All of the sudden, many trees had gone missing. The forest were on fire. Orang Utans were everywhere running to save their live, and I just sat here. I did not want to do anything. Aunt Serina died 2 weeks after my mother died. I had no one to take care of me. Many of us had died. I'm 3 years old and I'm left all alone. I ate anything I found. I need my mother, but she will never return to me again. Aunt Buffy and Cookie had ran away. I do not know where they are. I do not want to run away. I know I'm going to die like my mother and my dad. I have nothing else to treasure now.


I was sicked and I had not eaten for 3 days now. I was sure I was going to dying now till a human came and took me away. I had never been this close to a human before. I did not think of anything except to leave it all in God's hand. If they wanted to kill me, go ahead. I had nothing left. The human wrapped me in a blanket and kept me warm. They brought me to a strange place. A big house with little forest at the backyard. Many Orang Utans stay there. At the moment, I realized that I was lucky. The human came to help me. I survived here.


Now...


I'm a happy Orangutan with a happy life in WWF. WWF has saved my life and given me a place to stay, to eat, and to sleep. I met so many Orang Utans here and they are as well happy as I'm. I'm a 20 year old Orang Utan and still young. The story I told you was about my life since I was born till WWF saved me from a disease that attack every Orang Utan in the forest causes by the human. WWF gave new hope for me, and new hope for Orangutans as well.
